Chatty Patty (@blackramen_podcast) joins us on the Black Superheroes Matter Podcast. As one of the hosts and architects of the Black Ramen Podcast, Patty redesigns the “nerdy” archetype by challenging assumptions and stereotypes. The Black Ramen Podcast is a safe space for Black listeners in the anime community that gives them the opportunity to be unapologetic about their manga, comic book, and anime interests. The podcast also welcomes Black comic book creatives to send any projects you have over to them for reviews and feedback. One of her focuses is to promote artists that have great content that other Black and poc’s may enjoy.

Notable Time Stamps:
Covid-19:

4:40-4:52 “Me personally, I got to be out there. I want to build more listeners, more followers, networking, and I feel like the best way for me to do it is to actually be out there. Have my foot right there at the door.”

36:55-337:14 “Through the whole pandemic I’ve actually been able to just chill and just record, and talk about my favorite anime, my favorite manga, and been able to forget about all of the madness that’s been going on outside. It’s amazing, it’s helped me more than anything.”

Black Ramen Podcast’s Mission:

6:30-6:52 “I was looking for a place where I could actually connect with people like me and have conversations about art, about storytelling, about anime, about comics and there’s not a lot of them out there. So, I was like you know what? I’m not waiting anymore, let’s start this off.”

7:05-7:25 “I love talking to people and I love telling people my perspective on certain anime’s from the Black perspective. We don’t really see representation in anime so that’s not going to stop me from actually you know, critiquing them.”

7:28-7:53 “I just wanted to build a space for Blacks and poc’s can come together and actually vibe out and talk and actually come out with content of their own as far as animating, storytelling because that’s my biggest thing, I want to support Black creatives. I want them to know that if there is no space for you, make it! And I want to help.”

Being A Black Creative:

10:52-11:10 “You want the new generation that’s coming up right now to know that there is a place for them and if there isn’t, make one of your own. We are superheroes, we are the mightiest of the mighty and what makes it amazing is that look what we did for anime. We made anime pop culture, mainstream because Black people/poc made it hot. We may not be the biggest consumers but we definitely are trendsetters.”

15:59-16:28 “Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu, they wouldn’t have a place for me because of the way I speak and the way that I have no filter. But I know there’s going to be another version of me with blonde hair, blue eyed, that’s going to come out like ‘we can work with her, let’s work with Patricia, that’s safe, not Patty but Patricia. I’m just waiting for a white version of me to come out and then they’re like ‘that’s marketable”

17:57-18:17 “The objective is always to make money but also to enlighten poc’s and Blacks and let them know, don’t be afraid to put your content out there but as consumers we have to make sure we know where our money’s going and we control who we support”

18:19-18:47 “If you see a Black content creator and you like this person and you want more content, show support. If you see a Black artist out there that’s doing commission work, don’t ask for a discount. Support the artist because at the end of the day, Blacks and poc’s have to work ten times as hard just to get the basics of recognition or just to get a decent check”

Advice and Lessons Learned:

35:22-35:32 “It’s like One Piece, the experience is definitely like One Piece. You don’t look at the numbers, you don’t look at how long it’s going to take you to get to where you want to go, you just enjoy the journey.“ (Praise Oda)

35:40-35:53 “You just look at the experiences of the journey and appreciate the friends that you’ve gained along the way, the connections you’ve had, the networking, and the lessons that you learned.”

36:20-36:42  “Protection comes with a price, right? So you have to learn how to make sure that no one takes advantage of the name, the title, if money is being talked about, make sure that all of it is on paper”

Hey, this is Steve. I played football at Oregon State University and University of Hawaii. Now I doodle cartoons and blow stuff up on camera. I also make web comics too. Hopefully I can make this whole thing a full time gig so I can make the big bucks to pay for Medical School!
